The Sword in the Bone

Hi, this is the website about bone diseases.

Do you know some diseases tend to have a younger trend nowadays due to our unhealthy lifestyle? Have you ever wondered about how these diseases cause and how we should prevent them? If you want to know more, here it is!

This website covers eight diseases, including joint, dental, and two common diseases: anemia and osteoporosis. On each disease web page, we will introduce the prevalence of the diseases, causes, risk factors, consequences and suggest some methods to prevent the diseases. Under each web page, a checklist is provided to see whether you have a lifestyle that enhances your risk of getting the disease.

Hope you learn something about the diseases after browsing our websites. Go and check it out!

Joint Disease

Gout arthritis (GA) is one of the most common types of inflammatory arthritis that characterised by intense pain, active inflammation symptoms, and swollen joints.
It generally manifests as a single afflicted joint with red and severe pressure pain, especially when the first toe knuckles (metatarsophalangeal joints) are involved.

Degenerative joint disease (Osteoarthritis [OA]) is the most common form of arthritis. It is a common progressive multifactorial joint disease that is characterised by chronic pain and functional disability. Although osteoarthritis can harm any joint, it most frequently affects the hands, knees, hips, and spine joints.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune and inflammatory disease characterized by severe joint inflammation that results in destructive bone erosions. It is different from the wear-and-tear damage of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis damages the lining of human joints resulting in a painful swelling that may eventually lead to bone erosion and joint deformity.

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disease that may eventually lead to the fusion of certain vertebrae in the spine. Ankylosing spondylitis mainly affects the spine and may have associated peripheral arthritis, enteritis (inflammation of your small intestine), dactylitis (severe inflammation of the finger) etc.

Dental Disease

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a risky gum infection that gum pockets are created and get infected when the gums move away from the teeth. Left untreated can damage the bone, gums, and connective tissues supporting your teeth. Periodontitis can result in tooth loosening or even tooth loss.

Tooth decay

Dental caries, as known as tooth decays, is defined by the gradual decalcification of enamel. It occurs when bacteria grow on the surface of the teeth and form a colourless sticky film (germ film). If left untreated, the loss of minerals continues during erosion, damaging the tooth surface and creating a cavity.

General Disease

Anemia is a condition that you have low number of  blood cells or low number of haemoglobin concentration within blood cells which makes your blood has lower cpacity to carry oxygen to your body’s tissues. You might feel tired, dizzy, hard to breath easier.

Anemia

Osteoporosis (OP) is the most common form of the disease. It is characterized by a decrease in bone mineral content, a decrease in bone mineral density, and a degradation in bone structure. Osteoporosis is frequently referred to as a "silent disease" because it does not have obvious signs. Usually, bone mineral density (BMD) is used to assess whether people suffer from this disease. According to the WHO criteria, BMD that is 2.5 standard deviations or more below the average for young, healthy women is considered to have osteoporosis.
